There’s a shift happening in me.
There’s a shift happening on the planet.
Although I love writing about my personal experiences with food, sharing delicious recipes and raving about the many amazing client success stories there seems to be a very important thing happening in our world right now.
Global warming, environmental change and food politics affect the quality of the food you are eating.
As embarrassing as it is the closest I have ever been to being a political person is watching The West Wing on my Netflix, and although I have been radical in my life, being an activist scares me. I mean I am a Jewish girl from New York. I have deep fears when it comes to speaking up about issues that raise conflict. YET, I notice it’s time to say something because the food you eat affects your health.
At one point in my life eating was about cravings, binging and calorie counting. Then I wanted to heal an eating disorder, my digestion and my menstrual cycle so I paid attention to food energy and the power of whole foods, but when it comes down to it am I connected to the roots of my food? It seems even I, a food coach, whole foods educator and cooking teacher, have become disconnected.
Over the last month I have been reading ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, MIRACLE by Barbara Kingsolver. If you haven’t heard of it I HIGHLY suggest it. You can order it from the Fruition Health store. Here’s the link http://astore.amazon.com/fruitionhealt-20. (page two of General Food Knowlegde).
Barbara Kingsolver and her family moved to their farm in West Virginia and committed to living on only the food they harvested on their farm and the food from local farmers for 1 year! The book includes the personal stories of food cravings and food appreciation, food politics, recipes, and harvesting knowledge. You would think only a farmer needs to know some of this information but as consumers its so important!
I am deeply inspired.
It’s got me asking questions like; Where does my food comes from? How is the food handled? How does my food get to me? Is this a seasonal food or has it been imported from Hawaii, Jamaica, New York or China!? Yes I know I live in Northern California where food is abundant. I know I have an advantage over my clients living in the mid west but still, am I aware?
The other day I went to buy the chicken apple sausage I love and realized that it came from New Jersey. I put the package down. The farmers market was the next day so instead I went there and bought a similar food from the local farmer who lived 50 miles away.
WOW was that empowering! I ate closer to home that night, I supported a local farmer and didn’t give any more $ to the oil companies that drove that chicken apple sausage to CA from NJ.
I am also questioning old eating patterns. I wonder if one possible reason for our health concerns is because we can get whatever we want whenever we want. When I binged or calorie counted I used to check the package for fat content, sodium content and serving sizes. For years buying organic food was good enough but now its time for a deeper connection.
This inspiration has led me to the next FWH community creation.
