"How much time do you spend thinking about your food and your body?”
If you are health conscious you might say, "Well I think about it a lot.”
Me too. I plan my meals, make buying food a priority, schedule workouts as well as make sure there is ample time for relaxing and rejuvenation. But less than a decade ago the time thinking about food and my body seemed like a skip on an old 78 record. Round and round went the thoughts and there was no way out.
I oscillated between the spin out in my mind or being fed up and ignoring it, which lead to over eating. Later I realized that I needed to focus again, which meant back to spinning. Thinking about it now, that cycle was brutal.
In a session yesterday a client of mine and I were exploring how much her body wants to consume in one day. She then went on to share a realization: "WOW this is a way to keep women down isnt it? Just give them enough literature about how much we "should" weigh and what is the "right food and amount" and we spend most of our time thinking of food we don't have time or energy to think about anything else.”
I was proud of her. GREAT REALIZATION. We have discussed this many times in our work together but this was the first time SHE made the link herself.
It's true….right?
There is an oppression being played out here.
If the media, books and magazines asked us to listen to our bodies, slow down and tune in we might use food for what it's meant to be used for. Fuel.
Instead the message is….be a certain type, certain size and certain shape. If you don't fit that mold you'd better think about how you are going to do it. And as we all know the thinking can take up time and energy—lots of it.
So my question is, do you want to change that?
What would open up in your life if you were not consumed by food and your body? What kind of life would you lead?
HERE'S YOUR EXERCISE:
Take out a piece of paper or your journal and start to keep a list of the times of day, the things that stimulate you to think about food and your body, in a non productive way, and what you do when you think those thoughts. (Eat, stop eating, exercise, ignore it, distract yourself, look in the fridge over and over again, etc...)
After you complete that part of the exercise make a second list.
On this list write down what list #1 is costing you.
(Energy, fun, intimacy, creativity, etc…)
Now let's dream.
If you weren't thinking the thoughts you wrote down on list #1 what would you be thinking about? I know you know the answer. These thoughts are usually the things we want most but are afraid to admit, share and start to take action on.
Make a third list of those other things.
(Ideas, projects, dreams, partnership, etc…)
I am leading many clients through this exercise right now and what I love about doing it with them is that they are making a deep connection. They are noticing how the habit or routine of thinking of food and their bodies stops them from moving forward and living a complete and full life.
I know this because I used to do the same thing.
I invite you to take your health, your body and your life into your own hands and your own mind.
Trust me, it only gets better!
If you noticed that you were inspired by this exercise and want committed support so you can develop a deeper loving connection to your body and LIVE THE LIFE YOU WANT TO CREATE I recommend giving us a buzz and signing up for our free initial consultation.
During the session we will focus on your specific health history and health goals. If we are the right match we will design a program that gives you the tools to create a healthy and sustainable life!
