TRAVEL TIPS
How many of you try to finish every last bit of “business” before you hit the road on a trip. If you don’t I applaud you. Somehow I always feel the need to get that project done, pay all my bills (even if they are not due before I return) and clean the closet before I leave on a trip. Over the years I have gotten better at restructuring the priorities right before I am about to spend a certain amount of time relaxing and renewing my body, mind and soul.
Here are some of the guidelines & tip I have found helpful. I hope they support you too as you set off to new lands.
Enjoy your journeys this year.
First step:
PACK. Now this might seem obvious but it’s not always. If I pack first and then try to get everything else done I can always stop doing the extra stuff when it gets too late and I’m already prepared for my trip with out the over exhaustion. Try it. AND if you pack first you can be sure that you will have everything you need for your trip (especially your snacks and travel food).
Second step:
Now that you are on the road WATCH YOUR MINDSET. How many of us go into this mode? OOOOOOH Im in the airport, or on a road trip or away from my routine….. I can have all those special treats I never ‘allow’ myself to have at home.
UH-OH. You want to tame that devilish voice inside. Its there for all of us. I hear mine, but I don’t listen to it so much any more. This voice can be very tricky. So start to notice it. Even if you still reach for the cookies or candy at the airport or have that extra dessert trust me it will change if you start to watch your mind trick you when it says VACATION-EAT ANYTHING. Just because you are away from home your healthy lifestyle can travel too.
I especially emphasize this second step for those of you who travel a lot for work.
TIPS WHILE IN AN AIRPORT
Bring your own food for the plane. These days you have to buy the not so yummy or healthy meal anyway. Here are some ideas: Sandwiches, salads, nori rolls, rice-beans and vegetables, burritos. These ideas can be either made at home or bought ahead of time at your local health food store.
IF YOU DIDN’T BRING YOUR OWN FOOD
Here are some ideas you can purchase in the airport that can support your heath.
Look for restaurants . If you have time actually sit down and have a meal. Eating a “real meal” will help you feel more satisfied and settled. A much better solution when you have a long travel day ahead. If you don’t have time to sit and have the full meal ask if you can take food to go. Restaurants will give you a wider variety of foods and they are probably prepared healthier than the food you would find at a fast food restaurant. Opt for the salads, soups, sandwiches, chicken and veggies, the vegetarian entrée, or other full meals that might come with 2 side vegetables.
Try to find something green. Apples, salads, spinach rolls
Hit the salad bar - but watch for those specialty items on the bar that are usually higher in fat and calories.
More Japanese restaurants are showing up in airports. Ideas at a Japanese restaurant are really endless…miso soup, sushi rolls, seaweed salads, noodle soups
Baked potatoes (without all the cheese)
Buy fruit or fruit salad
Keep it simple - it seems there is always an ethnic restaurant in the airport, whether it be Mexican, Chinese, Japanese and they all see to have rice and veggies.
THINGS TO SKIP IN THE AIRPORT
Candy, fried foods, special treats that you think now that you are on holiday you can have at any time, try to stay low on the caffeine too as it dehydrates you
TIPS ON HOW TO NOURISH YOURSELF WHILE ON THE PLANE
Stay hydrated- each time they come around and ask if you want water get some.
Move your body - stand up, roll your head, walk the aisle, you can even do yoga standing poses in the aisle; warrior 1, warrior 2, etc… And don’t worry the people who might look at your funny are just bummed that they aren’t up doing the same thing.
Bring the “green stuff” ; spiralina, chlorella, algae, etc…Add it to tomato juice-tastes great
Avoid the alcohol
WHAT TO BRING FROM HOME FOR THE ROAD
Power bars, or other energy bars- try to get the kind with the least ingredients, fruit, nuts, homemade trail mix, air popped popcorn, your favorite bread and spread, avocados, dip and carrots, nori seaweed, fruit, rice balls, healthy cereals, soy-rice or almond milks
WHEN YOU ARRIVE
Now it will depend on the purpose of your trip and where you are staying. But even if you are at hotel and not in a place that has a kitchen you can still stock up on snacks that are healthy. So if you didn’t bring them from home
Hit the nearest health food store and stock up.
Buy snack foods that are healthy, soups- canned or boxed or the kind that you add water, organic instant cereals where you can add water, grains like cous cous or quick oatmeal, organic yogurt, organic eggs, veggies/snacks, any real food that you might be able to prepare or have someone prepare for you. High quality lunch meats and cheese.
Google healthy restaurants- find places to eat for breakfast, lunch or dinner that serve a wide variety of fresh foods. If you can find organic even better.
Here is a great resource for those of you that travel to different states often or if you plan on taking a road trip this summer
The Tofu Tollbooth written by Elizabeth Zipern, Williams Dar & Dar Williams.
They wrote it while travelling and performing on the road. It’s a guidebook to tons of healthy places to eat, health food stores, juice bars and more from state to state all over the USA. It was a lifesaver for me when I was on the road.
You can purchase a copy HERE: The Tofu Tollbooth
So those are my travel tips. If you have other ones that I didn’t mention PLEASE write me and let me know. In a few weeks if anyone writes me I will add your list to a newsletter and we can all learn from each.
In the meantime…happy trails!
