Did you start your herbal medicine cabinet? I’m curious. I got another great herbal resource from Sasha, one of our readers, Rosemary Gladstar. Check her out. THANKS SASHA!

Have you noticed all the talk about the food crisis? You probably feel it when you go food shopping- prices have increased. Although one thing I’ve noticed is that the more I eat locally produced food the prices are the same.

Well there is a lot to know about the future of food and I am ready to learn more about it. Want to join me?

This week I want to share the little I know about the salmon situation. A few friends of mine are hosting an event called CAN WE HEAL THE SALMON CRISIS? in San Francisco next weekend.

You can click UPCOMING EVENTS and go straight to the event details below to find out more.

In the meantime lets explore this food situation together.

In health,

Did you know the salmon are in danger? Many of you might have an investment in salmon; everything from receiving nourishment & healing when you eat salmon, to the food activists that don’t want to see animals sacrificed for human consumption, and those environmentalists who want to see the eco system stay on track.

Speaking of the eco system salmon are among the big players. There are 137 species documented as dependent on salmon, 41 are mammals including orcas, bears and river otters, 89 are birds, including bald eagles, Caspian terns and grebes, five are reptiles and two are amphibians. The one that freaks me out is the grizzly bear. Without salmon as their primary source of nourishment where will the bears come for food? Closer to human habitat?

In addition to how salmon feed the system they need to feed their own kind. Salmon are born in the rivers and then move to the ocean to feed and live. When it comes time to reproduce they swim upstream and “go back home” (to the river and their watershed). Yet there's not enough water in the rivers for the salmon to swim upstream in and/ or the rivers are now dammed up so the salmon cannot pass through to get to their ancestral grounds.

If salmon can return from the ocean, they bring vital nutrients with them. Salmon also return there to die and through their decomposing carcasses, the salmon spawning process offers a vital source of food not just for salmon and other fish species, but for a whole host of organisms in the watershed.

Yet salmon are near extinction. Recently the number of salmon has gone from 5000 to 300. The California salmon industry has collapsed and they have banned fishing in California. This is actually a local issue for those of us living in northern California and there are things we can do to help.

For example, right now the dams are up for relicensing and if knocked down this would give the salmon a chance to get back to their watershed, reproduce and attempt to put order back in effect.

In addition to the eco system being affected by the salmon crisis it touches on other issues such as:
Global warming: Due to the oceans temperature rising, salmon are dying because they need cold water to live in.
Food security: Many cultures actually depend on salmon as their main staple of food.
Health issues: If you follow principles of healing with whole foods, salmon can be medicinal for many health concerns.

As you can see we are all affected by this. There are things we can do and the first thing I am going to do is get more educated.

I highly suggest attending the benefit:

Save Yuba Salmon
From Source to Sea: the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival.
If anything you will learn a lot and hopefully be inspired to get involved.

In the meantime I am committed to my education about the overall food situation and promise to keep you posted.

  darshana's pick of the week

If you haven’t seen this movie I highly suggest renting it.

THE FUTURE OF FOOD
Directed by Deborah Koons Garcia

It came out a few years ago and I have watched it 4 times. Each time I watch it I learn something new. I also watch it over and over again because somehow I think “This isn’t true?” BUT IT IS! It’s bewildering and educational.

If you are a Netflix member you can watch it right away on your computer!

From Source to Sea: the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival

A totemic and magical creature is calling out to us from a place of peril. The Sierra Nevada's last wild run of salmon is in danger of extinction; their 2000-mile journey of sex, death and rebirth flows through the San Francisco Bay and most of us never know it.  Come to the SOURCE TO SEA environmental film festival and connect to the life-web of your greater watershed.

A benefit for the Save Yuba Salmon campaign , SOURCE TO SEA will present films from the Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival, (the largest environmental film festival in the United States, brought to you by Patagonia) along with performance, live music, food, drinks, and discussion of the California salmon crisis.

Featured films will explore trans-species communication in "Edge of Eden: Living with Grizzlies" and the 35-year evolution of Greenpeace in "Making a Stand".

Source to Sea is sponsored by a coalition of bay area activists, artists, and performers working to engage people in the Bay Area with our greater watershed - from the San Francisco Bay to the headwaters of the Yuba River in the Sierra Nevada.
